  • Individual or Group

The Topic Vocab Study Tool offers a unique and rigorous study method for improving English vocabulary knowledge. It works best as preparation for topic-based conversation or reading practice.

Vocabulary words for each topic are organized into groups from beginner to advanced levels:

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

Choose an interesting topic—or even better, prepare for English conversation or reading practice about a topic—by studying the vocabulary list at your current level. Once you have mastered all the words in the list for this level, you can move to a higher level.

You will study the words at random by reading definitions or example sentences. If you do not know a word, please write it down in a notebook and use a variety of notes to help you remember it, including definitions, example sentences, synonyms, images, and a translation or explanation in your native language.

If you know the word, you will choose the correct answer, and this word will be added to the “Finished” list. If you do not know a word, you will choose the incorrect answer, and this word will be added to the “Unfinished” list. After viewing the definitions or example sentences for all of the words in the list, you will need to repeat the process for all of the “Unfinished” words. During this time, use your notes to study and move all of the words into the “Finished” list. You may need to repeat the process until all of the words have moved into the “Finished” list.

As you study key vocabulary words for a topic, you will improve your knowledge of related vocabulary and grammar through the definitions and example sentences. Thus, you also benefit from repeated study of “Finished” vocabulary.

Once you are able to “Finish” a list twice without an error, you should have a comprehensive understanding of the key vocabulary, related words, and grammar for that level.

Complete the entire study process until you have moved all the words into the “Finished” list, and repeat this 2 or 3 times until you have a comfortable understanding of how to use and recognize all the words in reading, writing, and conversation about the topic. At this point, you are ready to move to a higher level.
